Supporting Growth, Fueling Minds
Schools are in a unique position to promote healthy behaviours. Children attend school for about 6 hours daily and consume as much as half of their daily calories in school. The child nutritionist at Café Nutrition works with schools to ensure students eat nutritious foods in the cafeteria and are counselled on good food choices and healthy eating habits from a young age. Preparing BMI charts and conducting body composition scans help identify weight concerns and implement prevention education. The school nutritionist provides regular nutrition education which provides multiple benefits such as decreased risk of obesity, increased likelihood of children creating healthy habits, improved cognitive development and a potential to decrease behavioral outbursts in an educational setting.
Teachers, school-staff, administrators, and parents are made a part of the program as they can model healthy behavoiurs and constantly reinforce healthy eating with students. Schools can benefit hugely as evidence suggests healthy food and improved nutrition improves learning ability, leading to better academic performance.
